A common question we get asked, is how long should I float and how often should I float?
Both of these are great questions and somewhat depend on where you are in your float practice.
How long should I float?
If you are new to floating…
We recommend starting with a 60 to 90 minute float session. 60 minutes is the standard time to float at a float center because it allows enough time to get into a meditation without it becoming over whelming or feeling like the time is dragging on. We also recommend floating for 90 minutes because it can take a while to relax and get comfortable in the tank. So this allows for about 30 minutes to get relaxed and then 60 minutes of meditation.
If you are an avid floater…
If you have been floating for a while now it can be good to extend how long you are in a float tank. Try going for 2 or even 3 hours and see where that float takes you. Or it can be fun to go in the tank with no time limits. Float as long as feels good and see how long that ends up being.
Extending your time in the tank can take you to new places in your float practice, mixes up your normal routine, and can help deepen your meditation in the tank.
How often should I float?
Whether you are new to floating or an avid floater, how often you float really depends on what you are trying to get out of float. If you float for chronic pain you may need to go every single day to see results. If you are floating for general wellness or to explore different levels of consciousness, floating 3 times a week may suffice. So really think about what you are wanting to get out of floating.
However, we do say to float as consistently as you can. If that is once a week or once a month, you are going to benefit most from consistency. We always say floating is like going to the gym. The more often you go and the more consistent you are, the more benefits you’re going to experience. So, we would recommend to start with floating 3-4 times a week, and then you may be able to scale back from there once you really start to see the benefits.
